Day 093
Dear dreamer,
Your disadvantage could be more...
I learnt a great lesson today. Of course, it was from a book but that's not important. I don't think it's news to anyone that family background plays an important role in our lives no matter what field. Now, what if I tell you that your biggest disadvantage can just be your winning formula if you were dogged enough. People often get miserable or discouraged when the odds are not in their favour especially in terms of things like family, educational or tribal background. It's good to look forward, chin up, head high and do the next possible thing. That might just be your winning formula.
The story was about immigrant Jews who were impressively good at what they studied- law. Their family background had no connections and it was a huge wonder that they even ventured into such a course because, practising law requires that you come from a 'rich' background. They were of course at a disadvantage so they were denied internship in the big law firms on Wall street. They took their chances. They had to join the smaller firms who took 'anything that came through the door'
I think we should have a mental picture of what that means. They took the jobs that Wall street lawyers did not want; cases involving hostile takeovers, M&As. Now, if you know anything in the field, you will know that presently, those cases are popular now. Before they became popular, this cases were their niche. People would take those gigs to them first before any other law firm. They became big shots themselves. Their disadvantage paved way for their winning formula. Time was the biggest currency that paid them. If they had not been rejected by virtue of their background, they would have at most been a senior partner at the law firms.
If we must fight and win, we must be ready to pay the price no matter how high or insane the price is. If the price is time, pay it. Hard work, pay it. Resilience, pay it. Turn your bad to good to the best you can.
